Grenada Youth gets head start
St. George's, Grenada , June 30, 2009 - Six students from T.A. Marryshow Community College interested in careers in the construction industry got an opportunity to see first hand what working in the industry could be like.

Creative Designs Building Construction (Barbados) Ltd., a leader in the Construction Industry, recently hosted a five-week internship training programme for six students. Dina McDonald, Jennifer Laltoo, Renee Mapp, Garvin Lewis Rudell Calliste and Darrel Sylvester were rotated among seven of the company's construction locations that included Fortress Development and The Cathedral.

The students' career interests include civil engineering, architectural engineering, engineering surveying, architecture and quantity surveying.  Part of the internship programme enabled the students to "work" alongside experienced construction professionals who provided them with insights into their individual fields of interest as well as to give them a taste of the real world of work.

According to Dr. Anselm LaTouche, President of Creative Designs, the internship programme with Marryshow Community College is one of several such initiatives put in place by our Human Resources Department both in Barbados and Grenada to help Caribbean youth achieve their academic goals.

"We have been participating in internship programmes involving our youth for several years. I am passionate and committed to our youth. I want them to know that careers in the construction industry can indeed be very rewarding.  As a company we will continue to do our part to ensure that this Region continues to produce skilled workers with the ability to work in a global marketplace," he said.
In commenting on the internship programme, Deborah King-Murray, Creative Designs Human Resources and Communications Manager said that giving students from the college an opportunity to put theoretical concepts into practice would provide them with the kind of head start necessary to pursue academic programmes leading to the degree level.
"We are committed to activities that support Caribbean young people and build the communities where we live and work.  Supporting educational initiatives is a great way to accomplish this", she said.
The students all said that the experience was a positive one - personally and professional. For at least one student a personal achievement was being able to overcome the fear of heights.
Creative Designs, through this partnership with T.A. Marryshow Community college, supports the colleague efforts in its vocational programmes.
